NEW YORK (Reuters) – The general manager of Turner Broadcasting’s Cartoon Network resigned on Friday in the wake of a “guerrilla” advertising campaign that sparked a terrorism scare in much of central Boston on January 31.

The advertising campaign featured blinking electronic devices wired to battery packs and planted on transportation infrastructure, leading police to fear they were bombs.

“As general manager of Cartoon Network, I feel compelled to step down, effective immediately, in recognition of the gravity of the situation that occurred under my watch,” Jim Samples said in a statement.

Cartoon Network on Monday agreed to pay $2 million in compensation to Boston area authorities mobilized over the scare, and two employees of a marketing firm hired by the Cartoon Network were charged with disorderly conduct.

The Cartoon Network is part of Turner Broadcasting System Inc, a unit of Time Warner Inc
