Review of Captain America #25
Where have you gone, Captain America,
Our nation turns it’s lonely eyes to you.
What’s that you say, Mrs. Robinson.
Captain America has left and gone away,
Hey hey hey.
Picking up where Civil War ended, Ed Brubaker and Steve Epting are responsible for rebuilding Captain America. The issue begins with a recap of Cap’s WWII origins, reminding readers of the 4-F kid who was selected to be the image and spirit of the country. They continue to trace his story through three important people in his life: The Winter Soldier, the Falcon and Sharon Carter. While recapping his history through his friends and lover, there’s also a running T.V. newscast catching us up on the most recent events—the Civil War. Essentially, this issue is covering the beginning and the end of Captain America.
The newscasts are covering the prisoner’s transport, as Captain America is very publicly led into the open where he’s harassed by angry New Yorkers who must think it’s the thirties again. They throw vegetables and call him unpatriotic names as he’s walked down the steps of his prison. Do people really throw vegetables nowadays? Then the events happen. Bullets are fired, people panic and Captain America is shot down on the steps in front of the cameras.
